Chief of Police, Eau Claire Police Department

Chief Elmer Sundby, age 48, a 13-year veteran of the Eau Claire Police Department, was fatally wounded on July 25, 1921 in the performance of his duties.
On July 25, 1921 at 10:30 AM, employees of the Wisconsin-Minnesota Power and Light Company were robbed at gunpoint of trolley car receipts. The robber fled toward the nearby Chippewa River where a search was taken up by officers and citizens. Chief Sundby confronted the robber along the densely wooded bank of the river. Three gunshots were exchanged. Chief Sundby was struck twice. The robber escaped by swimming across the river. Chief Sundby succumbed to his wounds the following day. Despite a massive search effort, the robber was never apprehended.
