towards A Sustainable City

In December 2013, the City Council created the Sustainability Advisory Committee. The committee works on and offers recommendations applicable to environmental concerns like energy, waste, pollution, food, etc. Please see their webpage for more information.

The City recognizes its responsibility and role in being a driver of change. In May 2009, the City of Eau Claire became an "Eco-municipality" by formally adopting
The Natural Step (TNS) as an approach to sustainability.

Groundwork to date has been the development of an
employee Green Team (2008-present) which focuses on greening city government operations by using TNS, and a chapter on sustainability in the City's Comprehensive Plan (created in 2009 and updated in 2015).

In July of 2012, the City became a signatory member of the State's Green Tier Legacy Communities program. This program distinguishes municipalities that are achieving superior environmental performance. Click here to learn more about the City's involvement and Green Tier Legacy Communities.

The City is a Tree City USA for the last 36 years and is an "Energy Independent Community", aspiring to use 25% electricity and 25% transportation fuels from renewable resources by 2025; capturing across the state 10% of the emerging bioindustry and renewable energy market by 2030; and leading the nation in groundbreaking research that will make renewable energy more affordable and create good paying Wisconsin jobs. Lastly, the City has earned Bird City Wisconsin status for the past two years.
